Am planting a tree. Have used a post hole digger to go down 7 feet.Which should I use to fill hole sand or?

Question: Necessary to dig beneath the layer of consciousness pan. This will allow better drainage of sand or gravel humble?
First I dug the hole root ball, then used auger down below hard pan because the trees in this vicinity is dead because hard pan trapped water and caused rot rot.

Answer: Repeat.
