Agricultural IDAHO, THEN AND NOW
- The median age in Idahos rural communities remains great in extent, and much older than urban areas. In nine counties, the median age rose to higher than 45. Clearwater County is the oldest at 48.1; the median age in Ada County, Idahos most urban and economically different, is under 35.
But the number of young adults in rural communities has increased. The perfect population in the states 37 most-rural counties grew by 8 percent and the company of 24- to 35-year-olds rose by 9 percent.
- Unemployment in pastoral areas remains consistently higher than in the 11 more-diversified urban counties, where joblessness rose to more than 9 percent during the depression. In 17 rural counties, unemployment stayed at double digits throughout the slump, with Adams and Valley peaking at more than 16 percent.
- Idaho pastoral incomes are smaller than those elsewhere, but some improved since 2001. In one year, 1973, georgic Idaho incomes reached the national average. Average household takings in Idahos smallest 37 counties was $43,052 in 1999, 76 percent of the nationalist average.
