Oconee County will use a fence to keep deer off the Oconee County Regional Airport’s runway.
The county ministry on Tuesday accepted a bid by A&T Fence, inc. of Lavonia, Ga., to install 7,350 feet of 8-foot check-link security fencing along the airport’s perimeter.
County administrator Scott Moulder said 95 percent of the estimated $129,085 get would be covered by a Federal Aviation Administration grant. State funding picks up another 2.5 percent, leaving county’s tangible outlay about $3,200.
Airport director Kevin Short said the cast should take about six weeks to complete. It will mark the end of a long-running effort to security the airport against deer wandering onto the runway during take-offs and landings.
“I’d like to see them try to space over an 8-foot fence,” Short said.
A collision between a plane and a deer in April 2010 resulted in a contend last year against the county of a reported $300,000.
In April 2009, the Clemson University uninterrupted carrying then head football coach Tommy Bowden hit a deer on splashdown, resulting in damage estimated at $70,000.
